Tidal River Tale
Debbie
Philips is an educator in a school
district in South Carolina. She has
been in education for 18 years and has
certifications in four areas. She and
her husband have lived in the
Summerville area for almost 30 years.
They are privileged to have two
children and five grandchildren.
Debbie has enjoyed the coastal
environments of Georgia and South
Carolina since her youth. She is a
hiker with an abiding love for the
barrier islands, teeming marshes and
winding tidal rivers of the southeast.
As
a support services teacher, she has
exposure to multiple grade level
standards. This affords her an
understanding of teachers’ need to
have access to cross-curricular
material that will address academic
standards in varied and engaging ways.
She hopes to create a series of
“tidal river tales” in a coastal
setting that serve that purpose.
Her
husband, Charles Philips, wrote his
Master’s thesis on the South
Carolina explorer Dr. Henry Woodward.
Together they have completed the first
of three historical fiction pieces for
a target audience of 3rd-5th grade
students and a readability of about
4th grade. The book chronicles the
early adventures of Dr. Woodward as he
begins the exploration of South
Carolina. It is especially relevant to
coastal history and fits a unique
niche due to its alignment with
several of the South Carolina, Georgia
and Florida curriculum standards for
3rd and 4th grade Social Studies. It
is historically accurate. It is
currently in submission to another
publisher.
